Categories for the 2025 Australian Web Awards have been finalised!  

This year, you can select from 32 award categories based on industry, business size, and technology used.   You can enter your digital work into multiple categories, but please note each category selection will incur an application fee.

You also have the option of adding on a ‘technology used’ category for each entry to qualify for an additional award.

Every category is judged using a combination of ‘judging disciplines’ and a simplified ‘judging criteria’ scale (for more information, visit Judging).

Every entry must nominate at least one category from the following options:

Agency

For agencies who would like to enter their own website. Typical entrants in this category include digital agencies, marketing agencies, branding agencies, SEO agencies etc.

Campaign

A NEW category for any website launched to highlight or create awareness around a specific campaign, e.g. advertising, product launch, advocacy, time-based promotion etc. 

Community & Culture

For websites that support the local community, promote cultural awareness or create connections through shared interests. Previous Community & Culture entrants include websites for child safety, university clubs, sporting groups, animal rights, art galleries and more.

Construction & Manufacturing

For websites in the construction, manufacturing and production industries. Past Construction & Manufacturing entrants include construction companies, product manufacturers and more.

Education

For websites in the education industry, such as primary schools, high schools, universities or Registered Training Organisations.

Entertainment & Events

For websites that support the entertainment industry or promote events. Past finalists and winners have featured websites for artist management organisations, music events, conferences and more.

Financial Services

For websites that offer financial services such as banks, financial planning services, investment companies and credit unions.

Health & Wellness

For websites that support the health and wellness industry. Past winners and finalists have featured websites for dietary advisory services, family planning, women’s health, medical services and more.

Home, Building & Interiors

A NEW category for websites supporting residential home building, commercial property development, interior design, and home improvement.

Government

For websites which are part of an Australian government department or agency, or a wholly government-funded program. Past Government finalists and winners have featured websites for public services, Government reports, local council initiatives and more.

Hospitality (Food & Drink)

For websites supporting businesses operating in the hospitality industry such as restaurants, food products, breweries, wineries and more.

Innovation

This is a broad category designed to acknowledge innovation/experimentation in any aspect of web technology. It could be on any platform; e.g. web, mobile, application, internet of things. Because we are looking at the boundaries of what is possible, WCAG 2.0 conformance is not a prerequisite, although minimum conformance should be part of outstanding practice where it can be applied.

Not for Profit

For websites which directly support industry associations, registered non-profits or charities. Past Not For Profit finalists and winners have featured organisations involved in animal welfare, disability education, health research and more.

For Purpose

A NEW category for websites which are part of an initiative or organization that supports humanity or the ‘greater good’ but NOT a Not-For-Profit organization.

Professional Services

For websites that offer specialised advisory, consultative, or technical services. Past winners and finalists have featured websites for legal services, architects, consultants and more.

Retail & ecommerce

For websites that support a retail or ecommerce business. Past winners and finalists have featured websites for fashion, Aboriginal art and food products.

Science & Sustainability

For websites that support scientific innovation, environmental sustainability, and eco-conscious initiatives. Past finalists and winners have included medical research organisations, space agencies and sustainable service providers.

Shoestring

For websites with a total budget under $15,000. This category recognises creativity, careful consideration and innovation within a smaller budget.

Startup

For websites supporting businesses that are less than 2 years old (as of 01/01/25)

Sport & Recreation

For websites that promote or support physical activity, fitness, and leisure such as sporting or leisure facilities, sporting teams and activewear.

Technology (IT/Software)

For websites that support or promote technology, digital products and software. Past winners and finalists have featured websites for cryptocurrency, online education platforms, and more.

 

Tourism & Travel

For websites which are part of the tourism or travel industry. Past winners and finalists have featured websites for travel agencies, tourist attractions, airlines and more.

 

Energy & Resources

A NEW category for websites that serve industries relating to the extraction, production, and management of natural resources.

Mobile App

This category covers a computer program or software application designed to run on a mobile device such as a phone, tablet, or watch. These applications must be available from one of the app stores (e.g. Google or Apple). Both Native and hybrid apps are included in this category.

 

Add-on a technology (Optional):
For your chance to be judged in an additional category (and perhaps win another award), you can select a technology from the following options (for an additional $79):

Drupal

This category is aimed at sites implementing Drupal as a CMS tool.

Headless

This category is for any website or web application that utilises a headless CMS, with the front-end of the website decoupled from the back-end.

 

Laravel

This category is aimed at any website or application utilising the Laravel framework.

React

This category is aimed at any digital project primarily utilising the ReactJS library to build and render its user interface.

Shopify

This category is aimed at sites implementing any of the Shopify web products.

 

Web App

This category is for software and applications built for the web. Web apps typically consist of complex functionality, authentication and integrations beyond the typical requirements of an informative website.

 

WordPress

This category is aimed at sites implementing WordPress as a CMS tool.

The standout entry in each judging discipline will be awarded a Best in Show Award at the 2025 Australian Web Awards. All entries to the Australian Web Awards will automatically be considered, the winner being the highest-rated entrant for each of the core judging disciplines.

The six Best in Show Awards for 2025 will be for the following disciplines:

McFarlane Prize for Excellence

McFarlane Prize for Excellence

Named in memory of noted Australian web pioneer Nigel McFarlane, the McFarlane Prize aims to recognise and encourage excellence in digital by Australian developers.

The McFarlane Prize is the ultimate Award, and goes to the entry which performed the best across all six judging disciplines (accessibility, content, design, development, user experience and SEO), and really is the best of the best at the Australian Web Awards.
